Are cover crops included in the Nitrogen model?
Overview:
Discussion of cover crops in the Nitrogen model.
Requirements:
- Corteva Connection Establish (If wanting to push/pull zones)
- Roles and Permissions set
- Invoice Granular Agronomy through Connex
- Fields are in Insights
- Crops Assigned in Activities
- Decision Zones Created or Synced from Corteva
- Field Details Set
- Add New Nitrogen or Planting Events
Answer:
No. We currently do not have adequate data available to calibrate the Nitrogen model to accurately account for the widely ranging situations presented by cover crops. There are many different species used as cover crops, they are killed at various stages, and the stand density can vary tremendously between growers, fields, and within fields. Cover crop composition (carbon pools and nitrogen percentage) and dry matter quantity change, not just by species, but over time within a species (think early spring to late spring). This makes the process of modeling the effects of cover crops in the model challenging. This is a future opportunity for model improvements.
