Answer:
Granular Nitrogen uses a process that compares the level of soil nitrogen on the day of the planned application with the anticipated crop need at silking for each decision zone in the field. The system then runs individual simulations using multiple years of local weather data for that field to examine the crop needs, plant uptake, and potential losses from different rates of nitrogen applied to the decision zone. This process can involve as many as 15 simulations per decision zone per weather year. From these scenarios, we solve for the most likely application rate to meet the yield target given weather patterns similar to what has historically occurred in that field. In addition, we provide information on what that soil nitrogen might look like given more extreme weather conditions through shading around the line for future dates.
No model is perfect. Unlike most other services that provide only a nitrogen rate (usually for the entire field), our Granular Nitrogen service includes the expertise of a local, experienced CSA that can help adjust inputs and outputs to account for exceptional situations and incorporate unique local conditions and management that might not be adequately reflected by a model alone.
